Ephesians chapter 05

  1. Ephesians Chapter 5 teaches us how to walk in love, light, and wisdom while while watching around us to be wary. We also learn the christian principles of submission in different relationships.  Why is the word therefore used in the first sentence.
  2. Verse 1 of Ephesians Chapter 5 tells us to be imitators of God. How are we to imitate God? How is this different to think about, admire, adore, worship God? Who is our model? Why should we do this (see V2)? Is this part of Ephesians 4:13?
  3. See Matthew 18:3.
  4. What was Jesus’ example in V2?  See Romans 12:1. Are our offerings fragrant to God?
  5. How are we to live our lives according to Ephesians Chapter 5, verses 2, 8 and 15?
  6. What are the six things Christians should not have in their lives according to verses 3 and 4 of Ephesians Chapter 5? Do other translations help? How acceptable are these things in our society - how do people rationalise acceptance of them? Is it too late for you? How strong is the phrase, not even a hint? Do you think people know they are idolators?
  7. What reasons does Paul give for Christians to not have these six things in their lives (see V4,5)?
  8. What have you done or could you have done in situations which are out of place for Christians? Should you point out V5-6 to people? What is the warning in V6 for Christians?
  9. How significant are the changes described in V8-9:  you were, now are…?
  10. How can we expose the fruitless deeds of darkness from verse 11?  Read the following verses to gain an understanding: John 8:12; John 9:5; Acts 13:47; 2 Corinthians 4:6; and 2 Timothy 1:10.
  11. In the following verses we are told to do certain things:
    1. Verse 1 - Be imitators of God
    2. Verse 7 - Therefore do not be partners with them
    3. Verse 15 - Be very careful, then, how you live
    4. Verse 17 - Therefore do not be foolish
    5. Verse 18 - Do not get drunk on wine

List the contrasting verse(s) for each and the contrasting command(s).

  1. What things are done in secret (V12)? What does the verse say about them? What happens to them when they are no longer secret (V13)?
  2. Should we avoid some types of people (V7)?  See V11.  Did Jesus avoid them (Luke 15:1.  Luke 19:7)?
  3. Do most Christians/churches look like they heed V14?
  4. Why is V15 important?
  5. What is the relevance of V16?  Do we, do churches pay attention to this? If not, why not? (See Romans 13:11-12.  Isaiah 60:1)
  6. How do we practice V17? (See Romans 12:2.  Colossians 4:5. 2 Timothy 3:16)
  7. Do we need to follow V18 (be filled with the Spirit) before following V19? What are psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit? Do we/should we follow V18? (See 1 Corinthians 5:19. Acts 16:25)
  8. Who is the audience in V19,20?
  9. How hard is V20? (See Philippians 4:4.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
